Currently nothing here yet...

Everything from 2022!

January to August of 2022:

"Flowers", digital, June 2022

This was drawn on an iPad Pro 12.9" by me as I wanted to experiment with the creation of digital art and I wanted to make something cute. This has become the background of my Discord profile!

Georgia O'Keeffe artist's copy, oil pastel

This is a copy of a piece by Georgia O'keeffe along with an artist research section. I believe this piece was done in the first half of 2022 but has been presented after Hands, pencil.

September 2022

Experimental Drawing with Skulls, mainly pencil + pen

This was my first work for this portfolio and this sketchbook! It consists of four skulls drawin in different ways, the top two being with my opposite hand (left) and pen and pencil (right), with the lower two being done blind (left) and continuously drawn (right). I enjoyed this experimentation and it helped me get started on this portfolio!

Mark Making Techniques, mixed media

This is a page I used to experiment with different techniques of mark making, as the title suggests, including the likes of stippling and contour lines. I also got to experiment with different kinds of utensils, like pencil and fine liner, which I would come to use often throughout this sketchbook.

October and November 2022

Tonal Studies, "Non-alcoholic deconstructed wine" + "Falling leaves & a rising flower", pencil

This is a small page where I attempted two tonal studies done in pencil, which unfortunately did not turn out well. At the time I found the tonal studies difficult to shade and detail.

Acrylic Experiments(A) and (B), acrylic paint

I moved on to acrylic paint and started to experiment with different techniques, including the likes of sgraffito and using cardboard, two methods I was yet to encounter. This experimenting helped me get used to using acrylic paints, letting me learn my way around them. This page also included the first "Did you know..?" section, which would become a running theme throughout this sketchbook.

Artist Research: David Hockney

This is my first artist research page of my sketchbook, which I chose to do on artist David Hockney as I have previously enjoyed his work and found him interesting. He is English and was born in 1937 and came out as gay during the period of time when it was illegal to be gay.

Artist's Copy: David Hockney, acrylic paint

I chose to make a copy piece of a piece by David Hockney called "Yellow Tulips" which was created in 1997. My version of this piece was created using acrylic paint. I enjoyed creating this piece and I think it turned out well, however I found it difficult to paint the small and precise areas as well as the different yellow shades

Oil Pastel Experiments, oil pastel

This page is dedicated to experimenting with oil pastels including blending and sgraffito using acrylic. I enjoyed working with oil pastels as I was able to easily blend them together, which I have struggled with with other mediums. This page also features a "Did you know..?" section too!

"Yellow flower on white background", oil pastel

I drew (what I believe to be) a Chrysanthemum and added colour with oil pastel using an image titled "Yellow flower on white background" that I found nice. I enjoyed the creation process and the result I find cute and I think it turned out well.

Chalk Experiments and "A sunset", chalk

On this page I included a section for my chalk experiments as well as a piece done in chalk titled "A sunset". Using chalk turned out difficult due to the chalk dust marking the other areas of the piece as well as being exact without damaging other areas of the pice. I enjoyed experimenting with chalk and I found the experimentation pieces easy and enjoyable to do and I belive they turned out well and helped me develop my understanding for chalk.

Alcohol Markers, "Church", alcohol markers

This page has eight techniques on it -including swirls and cross-hatching- as well as an art piece of a photo taken by me of the Église notre-dame-de-l'Assomption in Èze, Alpes-Maritimes Department, Province-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, a church in the French Riviera. I took it during a holiday to there and I decided to recreate it using alcohol markers. I found this difficult as the alcohol markers were difficult to adapt as it is hard to blend and shade with them, meaning I couldn't create colours different to the ones I already had, hence why the clocktower is a weird shade of yellow.

Water Colour Techniques, watercolour

I then moved on to experiment with watercolour paints, where I tried using bleach, water and other techniques to alter the watercolours. I enjoyed experimenting with watercolour as I found it easy to work with and adapt, although it was difficult to mix the water and paint to get exact ratios, however I could improve my skills regarding that. You can view the other four experiments on the next page.

"Cannon", watercolour

This piece is a watercolour piece of a cannon I took a photo of in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat in the Alpes-Maritimes in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur in France. I liked creating this piece as it was not challenging to do but was still fun to do and turned out quite well. Blending was difficult and some areas were left white as I couldn't easily fill them in for some reason. This page also includes a "Did you know..?" as well!

Wire,"Miaou" + "Small man" + "Large man" + "Up, Up and Away!" + "Lighter than Air" + "The skyline of an unnamed City", wire

This marked a change in my work as I moved to using physical objects to create art rather than on paper. This was something I had never tried before which I really enjoyed trying something new. I like the outcomes and I find them cute, although I found it difficult to bend and shape the wire in tight formations and it kind of hurt my fingers as I had no tools other than some scissors. They are very simplistic as it was my first ever try at this.

"Coat Hangers", wire

I then decided to create coat hangers in a thicker wire than I was using. These were difficult to bend and shape but turned out looking roughly like hangers. One is made simply with only one wire and the second is wrapped again to increase strength. Both were able to hold up coats for 45 minutes while only bending slightly. I am happy with these pieces as they turned out well!

"Your body is not yours", wire

This piece was inspired by a suggestion by a friend who said that one of my coat hangers reminded them of a reproductive system. I then chose to create that as a new piece combining a coat hanger and the shape of a reproductive system. I was also inspired by the overturning of Roe Vs. Wade in the USA, making this a political piece in protest of the state of the rights of AFAB people in the world.

Animal Experimentation & Mixed Media, "Spikey!", pencil, "Peekaboo!", mixed media, "Tiny!", pen

Here, I made three pieces based off of images cut out of a BBC Wildlife magazine. I created "Spikey!", a tonal study of a hedgehog, "Peekaboo!", a mixed media piece of a small mouse and "Tiny!" which is a pen study of a small mouse! They turned out very cute and I enjoyed making these. "Spikey!" is my first use of a 4B and 6B pencils in this sketchbook as I used them to add darker and deeper colours for the hedgehog! This page also includes two "Did you know..?" sections too.

"The fish that cannot float", pencil

I created a large tonal study of a statue of a fish I found while on holiday in Benidorm, Spain. This piece was first done in 2H pencil and then later highlighted with 4B and 6B pencils. I enjoyed creating the piece and I love the outcome! I think the darker sections turned out well too. I used multiple techniques to shade these areas as well.

"The Strelitzia", acrylic paint

After, I chose to paint a photo of a Strelitzia (A Bird of Paradise) that I took while on holiday in Benidorm in Spain. I found the flower very cute and pretty so I chose to paint it. I really like my end result as the colours are very vivid and I find it pretty to look at! The process of creating this was enjoyable :D.

Tonal Studies of 1930's Teardrrop Cars, "Talbot-Lago T150-C SS 'Goutte d'Eau'" + "Bugatti Type 57 SC Atlantic", pencil

I enjoyed my "The fish that cannot float" piece a lot, so I decided to do another tonal study or two, as you can see! I chose to draw two cars that I personally like, the Talbot-Lago T150-C SS 'Goutte d'Eau' and the Bugatti Type 57 SC Atlantic, which are both 'teardrop' shaped cars, a design used to mitigate the effects of aerodynamic drag. I really enjoyed creating these studies, especially the darker areas using a range of pencils (2H, 4B and 6B) and I think the results are good ^^.

"Thor", collage

This piece is a collage of different colour paper, cut out and stuck together to resemble one of my cats, Thor. In total I used six (oops) different sheets of paper to create this. It was very time consuming but I think it turned out well... althought it does look slightly goofy lol. The hardest area to do was the eyes as getting the proportions and sizes correct was difficult.

"Kurt Schwitters inspired piece", collage

This is an artist research page and inspired piece using collage, which Kurt Schwitters often created. I chose to do Schwitters as I wanted to do more collage after my piece on my cat as I enjoyed doing it. The images I used were taken out of some magazines I had and I thuroughly enjoyed the process of this. The outcome is quite cute :).

"Nature and Humans", collage, (A) and (B)

This piece was created as I wanted to make a collage based on animals and nature in general, but when I was creating that I was coming across a lot of content involving the human effect on animals and our environment, so I chose to create a piece that involves it. On one side there are many cute animals, but on the reverse side there are many articles involving the destruction of the environment are killing of animals, making this the second political piece!

December 2022

Learning how to draw: Hands!, pencil

One night at ~2am, while sick with COVID and off school, I chose to draw some hands in order to get some experience with them as I previously was terrible at drawing hands! I drew ten different hands in numerous positions to try to practice. I enjoyed this practice and I think it turned out well as it definitely did help me and was fun!

"Pink Sky", digital

I created this piece to serve as the background for this website! It went through a few iterations before the final version was made in order to scale the image properly and work better with the boxes around it as well as to add the little scenery at the bottom too! I find this background cute, but my digital skills aren't that good as you can see, but I still think it turned out well ^^.

Everything from 2023!
